Love the sea and everything related. Trips to the beach when I was a kid were like super adventures. You never new what you might see. Like a seagull perhaps? Lately I've been listening to some Spanish Guitar music on Pandora while painting, pretty cool stuff. Look for the Spanish Guitar Radio Station.

This was a seascape demo I did a couple weeks ago at the City House Summer House Interior Design Studio on Galveston Island, Texas. Had a lot of fun painting it as you might notice. Time just seemed to fly by while painting it. As people came in to see the painting progress it was fun to chit chat and have a blast.

I liked this view I did on a small 8x8 panel and thought it would be worthy for the big 24x24. A rare day, big surf at Galveston Island, Texas and it's firing off the end of the 29th Jetty. If you know your jetties at Galveston this one is a big jetty and extends farther out than most so it truly was a big day.

One of the toughest subjects, in my point of view, is the back lit subject. There were about three or four of these boats mucking about near a marina at Galveston Island. This one happened to pull out just in front of the sun. I guess I could call it a Boat Eclipse.

It's about that time of year when the cold weather starts rolling in. I remember about 15 years ago, approx. when the cold weather rolled in and it froze on Halloween Night, it's been that long since it has reached that as far as I can tell.

Another for surf series. A view of the 27th Jetty during a massive wave crashing just in front of the Jetty. I've also included a photo of a frame option for those who might be interested in getting a nice frame. I like the frames Randy Higbee produces, they are really nice, and he calls them "Gourmet Frames". This one below is the La Paz floater with a gold lip. Here's a link to his website with many more frame options to choose from. www.Kingofframe.com

What's this, an abstract? This is about as far as I push them as of yet. Don't get me wrong I do love realistic painting and this one has it in it however I pushed the abstract a lot more on this one than I have done in the past. Once in a while I like to play just like everyone else in the world and stretch my limits some. Trestles is a name that just popped in my head, a popular surf spot in San Diego area.

Rainy day today. After making some errands during all this mucky weather today I come home and look out to my favorite field and wouldn't you know it, I had to paint this scene. Grabbed my gear, walked outside, setup, and painted and had a blast. It was misting while I was painting and towards the end it started to hit more like drops. Luckily, most of the scene was finished. So I headed for the porch just in time as it really started pouring. Some touches here and there and my signature and voila can't get any better than that. Having some fun painting on what most people would think as a crummy day.

Point Break, remember the movie with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. Awesome surfing movie I might add. Wonder if a sequel could be made a sort of continuing theme. Sorry to hear Patrick Swayze had passed in 2009 and wonder what movies he could have made if he had lived longer.

From under the pier to over the jetty, a view of the somewhat colorful surf in the early morning hours at Galveston Island near the Pleasure Pier, aka Flagship Pier. I named the painting Monte Diablo after one of my favorite short stories, The Black Pearl. If you haven't read it it's a good story. It's based in La Paz mexico and about a kid who's father owns a Pearl Diving company who learns how to grow up under some extreme circumstances in his life. I won't spoil the story so read the book, it's by Scott O'dell.

Heard a Tom Petty song today and could not get it out of my head, running down a dream, that never would come to me, working on a mystery , going wherever it leads, running down a dream..... Well, fall weather has reached it's toes down here on the coast of Texas. In short order it also demolished the surf that was so great yesterday. I can't complain though the weather was really nice outside, got some work done, not related to painting unfortunately. Has anyone had any good dreams lately? Drop a line let me hear about it.

For sale at the City House Summer House
Studio on Galveston Island, Texas

Seascape Demo: Ahhh, the sea, miss it already. Today the surf was big by Galveston's norm. I'd say, at least some sets were shoulder high.

During the Galveston Art Walk I did the above painting as a demo at the City House Summer House Studio and with my friend Martha, a great host, and co-owner of the City House Summer House. I want to thank all who dropped by, it's so nice to see familiar faces  and new ones too. Made a couple sales there also, can't complain, and I can't wait to paint again down there it's a lot of fun.

to the photo in the previous post pretty big difference isn't it?

It's definitely been a while since I've painted a still life. This one was not setup as in purposefully constructed. It's 'As Is' and it attracted my attention for the last past two days especially at night which gave it more of a contrast. I painted this Bonsai Pot in my kitchen area illuminated by some warm light from the kitchen and had to add a second light behind me to help illuminate my palette on my pochade box. Unfortunately that made the contrast of this scene less than what you see here. I've actually painted a scene, a more zoomed out look, of this same area which you can view here, 'Vintage at 2am'. The Bonsai Pot would have been on top of the vintage radio you see in the scene. I would have been situated a little to the left of that chair and a little closer to the radio.

It's interesting to see how waves break. They tend to behave somewhat the same especially if they come in sets. However, here in Galveston we get the washing machine effect a lot and it's chaos. This is semi clean waves coming on this day. I've definitely seen it smoother and more defined in fact I've seen it with over a foot visibility near the shore and that's clear for Galveston's standards. That happens usually in the summer when the wind and rain are nil.

The early surf gets the best waves, most of the time. Usually the morning times are the best times to catch waves since the winds are usually died down and let the waves come in un-altered at least that's what I think.

Exhausted and tired today and sitting here looking at this painting on my easel and for some reason I really like it. Must be the toned down gray's and the wave that feels as if it's about to totally crash and fold over and finally washing away into the rest of the sea.

The Spot

This is a favorite spot for surfers when the waves get big depending on the conditions one side can be better than the other. The Pier is called the Pleasure Pier, a big amusement park with rides etc on top. It used to be called the Flagship Pier and you could drive out onto it. At the end was a bait/fishing store and a lower deck so people could fish from. Unfortunately not anymore since Ike, the hurricane, messed it up. I've only seen one surfer get barreled at Galveston, and it was a fluke wave really close to shore no more than 25yds at least. Some how the wave jacked up and the surfer was right there dropped in and got tubed, it was a small tube but it was really cool to see.
