Tiki Island

Tiki Island
Galveston Texas
8 x 10
Oil on Panel
Randall Cogburn

Sold

I have some 8 x 10's I'll be going through in the future. This is a view of some marshland and in the distance is Tiki Island. On a previous kayak trip, I launched here. I paddled out and up and over a train track and into Galveston Bay, and made the voyage to rendezvous at Galveston Island State Park. A long trip for sure, but luckily this kayak had a small sail that made the trip faster.

These guys couldn't resist heading out on a very stormy day into Galveston Bay to sail around. There were about six or so. I remember going out here on  a kayak and seeing a bunch of them sailing around. It was really fun to watch.

What a rainy day this was, but the waves were really great. That didn't stop people from going to the beach, there were still quite a few people around. There were some breaks in the weather and for sure another cloud was coming right in to fill the gap.

Near Shore

Near Shore
Galveston, Texas
24 x 24
Oil on Canvas
Randall Cogburn

"Near Shore" will be entered into the Galveston Art League Juried show starting in September. It will be framed with a gold leaf floater frame which goes great with these paintings. I enjoyed painting this one so much that I plan on making more in the future so keep tabs. The sailboat in this painting is called a Ketch, two masted, gaff rigged sailboats. The painting below will be entered into the Juried Show also, it's titled "Sea Bound",  a 24 x 24 Oil on Canvas framed with the gold floater frame. If you get a chance, and your near Galveston Island, come see it during the Galveston Art Walk this August 24th.

Once in a while I see the cows roam around this group of trees. It's the only real spot that has lots of shade and they tend to congregate here at night. In the spring time there's always new calf's born and it's interesting to see them grow up. This little guy was keenly aware of me, perking it's ears up.

Survivng Devils Bridge

Surviving Devils Bridge
Seascape

Devils Bridge, a not so well known passage way only passable during peak high tides. A short cut that saves days worth of travel for those brave souls lucky enough to survive it's mayhem. Shifting sand banks, underlying rocks, channeled winds that howl like no other, and current's like a washing machine. No wonder many fear the crossing of Devils Bridge.

The Moving Sea

The Moving Sea
Galveston Island, Texas
Seascape
8 x 8
Oil on Panel
Randall Cogburn

Sold

More of the sea. Just out past the 27th Jetty Galveston Island, Texas. Sometimes it breaks good out past the jetty and on good days the water can look really nice looking but on most it's, well, brown or some value of it do to the shallow area of the coast. Surprising though the depth around the Flag Ship Pier, aka Pleasure Pier, is deepest in these parts and can cause some nice surf breaks which also translates to these nice looking turquoise waves.

In for Repairs

In for Repairs
Galveston Island, Texas

A nice sailboat out of it's domain in for repairs. It's like having surgery except it's a sailboat and can be highly costly. Some say there money pits and I agree especially if you have no clue of what your doing.

Bad idea to be out at sea in a sailboat. The eminent demise of the boat and crew seen by a couple of seaman perched on top of the rocks wait to see how it unfolds.

It was a less than perfect day. The waves were nice and clean, and coming in defined sets, but to small for even longboarders to paddle into. This wave was to small to paddle, good call since the next set was bigger.

Gleaming the Tube

Gleaming the Tube

Lat in this short series, more to come of a different series. The title is a spin off of an old movie, well maybe not that old but for some possibly way to old. Can you guess the title? I'll give you a hint, 80's movie and for some odd reason I actually remember the main character, Christian Slater. I don't think there's any surfing in that movie.

Seaward

Seaward
Galveston, Texas
8 x 8
Oil on Panel
Randall Cogburn

Sold

Stormy it was. Nice day for some waves. Kind of has that cold steel feeling to it doesn't it? Although it's hot, real hot down here this time of year. Can't wait to get some really good days. If I ever get a chance there's a channel down in Freeport, Texas that can get pretty big surf coming in and I hope to get some paintings of that. I've seen it in person and what a sight it was.

On the Horizon

On the Horizon
Alvin, Texas
8 x 8
Oil on Panel
Randall Cogburn

Sold

Love clouds and especially those illuminated. This one was near the horizon viewed from a huge open field toward the evening. There's actually a ghost painting under this painting. After about 2hrs of tackling a train painting that I thought would turn out great I decided I went to far and scraped it all back down. After a break I decided to go for something more dramatic, enjoy!!

Holding On

Holding On
Seascape

Sold

When the wave get's big fast better hold on for the ride. Dropping in on a macker of a wave. I kind of like the small sample below as a stand alone painting. Might have a go at doing close up's and have fun with it, what do you think? What have I learned from painting so far? Well the least amount of brushwork possible to state what you want the better the painting will be, especially in impressionistic painting. Hope you have an awesome weekend.

Anchored off 27th

Anchored off 27th
Galveston, Texas
8 x 8
Oil on Panel
Randall Cogburn

Sold

Sometimes inspiration for a painting can strike me at any moment and those moments that get me going enough to paint become small steps into making my art a little better. However this one I think took me in a direction I wasn't expecting and glad I had painted it. Below is a look a where I sometimes paint. I use my pochade box, what I use to paint outdoors with, to hold my 8 x 8 panels. I don't use the palette on the box rather a bigger palette to the left which I had removed. It's pretty big. Also a small sketch which I thought would be interesting to show how I sometimes plan paintings. Half the time all I think is needed is a slight adjustment in composition from a reference and sometimes it's just a "no brainer". Other times like this one I wanted to plan it out first. On the wall the painting that's framed is one of my favorites, painted at the 29th jetty I believe at Galveston Island.

Some beach life near the 27th jetty at Galveston Island, Texas. Sort of my local spot I like to go to. Lately lots of people coming down to check out the beach. Pretty hot this time of year.
