Surf Hat...

My surf hat hanging on the wall caught my attention so I had to paint it. Since my photo capability is somewhat limited, it doesn't pick up the color depth the painting actually has. I have to put a disclaimer don't judge the photo as there's more to it.

I used to have the best surf hat made by Billabong, had a nice wide rim and had a landscape tropical scene sewed into the rim underneath. I used it especially on trips to the beach going surfing or fishing etc. but sometime last year it vanished and after looking everywhere for days, I finally caved and went looking for another one.  The old one had sentimental value to it, since my dad turned ill, I let him use it a lot when we took trips to the beach. He loved that hat and when he came with me he wore it, not me. I called him Captn since he liked sailboats and sailing which was something he got interested in later in life. This one is made by Quicksilver, not as good but it does the job. To Purchase email me here.

Port Bolivar Marina

A small shrimp boat docked at the Port Bolivar Marina where the big huge fishing boats play. To get there you have two options the first is to go take a ferry ride from Galveston Island over to Bolivar or go the really long way north to High Island and down the coast, both ways are fun to go however the ferry ride beats the longer trip. This one I painted after one of the oil painting classes at the Galveston Art League, I had a little bit of fun that day since it was the last day of the session and talking while painting is fun. Since this is a 6 x 8 I chose the Catalina Black with Gold to frame it. Price is $160 with shipping. To purchase contact me here.

Framed Bokeh Vistas for sale.....

My original Bokeh Vista's are for sale and I decided to use a company called King Of Frames. They make professional quality frames for artists. The Catalina Small Black with Gold is my favorite and made as a floater frame so you see the full painting.  These are 6x6 and the frames are roughly 2 1/2 wide about 1 1/2 thick.

Galveston Art League Juried Show...

I have some paintings in the Galveston Art League Juried Show come by and check them out in person. The first is a barn I saw on a trip towards Matagorda Beach. The barn was near a town called Wadsworth, TX. The second is a painting of some girls heading toward the water.

In the month of September I will be teaching a Still life workshop it's not official but keep checking back and I'll post more about it. It will be at the Galveston Art League starting on Saturday 8th.

Also I might do something called the Galveston Sketchup a fun get together for anyone who likes to sketch. It's informal and will have a small fee and we will be going to different places on the island as well as a Contest so look for that as well. Below are some sketches I've done on location the first is a jeep we used to have in what I called the "Boat Yard" since we used to have at least one sailboat in there all the time which at that time I wasn't sketching unfortunately would have been some great material. The middle sketch is one I did on a trip to Seabrook near a park called Pine Gully park with a nice view of Galveston Bay and the Galveston Island in the distance, a memorable one since my dad was with me. The last one is a pretty interesting story. I was in the store called Cut Rate, a big fishing store just South East of Houston getting some gear for the kayak and saw these great big huge fishes suspended from the ceiling. That quickly became something I had to attempt to sketch.

In October I'll have another Plein Air painting class I'm really looking forward to doing, cooler weather but still can be warm, will vetnure to some different spots on Galveston Island like we did last spring of this year. The last session we ventured to the beach of Galveston and near the Channel as well as Bolivar and the Galveston Harbor, this year I plan on going to some spots I'm familiar with and should be a lot of fun as well as some spots that would be difficult to gain access to without permission. I might also run an Advanced Plein Air workshop for painters that know how to paint and/or have some experience painting outdoors. I plan on doing some more challenging places so keep checking back and if your interested in one of the above classes let me know.

Wadsworth is a small town with a population of about a couple hundred. It's on the route to go to the beaches of Matagorda. Wadsworth has only about two gas stations and I usually stop at the one that sells pizza to get some beef jerky,  it's something I've done ever since I was a kid going on trips to Matagorda with family. This small barn located near the town, I forgot where exactly, caught my eye since it was in the late evening, the sun had lit it up giving it some color in the shadow also on the front. I might be putting this painting in an upcoming Juried show in September at the Galveston Art League. It will be for sale and if you would like to purchase it contact the Galveston Art League and ask if it's available. I plan on putting this painting in a floater frame made of Soft Maple.

Basic Oil Painting Workshop.....

Pear Demo
6" x 8" Oil on Panel

It was a blast this past month during the Basic Oil Painting workshop I gave at the Galveston Art League. Here is a demo of a pear I did for everyone to learn from. We were so busy that I had forgot to take photo's of the group. We had so much fun that many were wanting to have more classes. So look forward to possibly having more this coming week as well as another plein air workshop hopefully sometime this Fall.

Some students have asked why I sign my paintings with Kirby and the reason I do that is my middle name is Kirby which was given to me by my Father who his dad's middle name is Kirby also. To honor a man I wish I could have known more I sign my name Kirby, plus it's nice and small and fits just about anywhere, just perfect don't you think.

Thanks,
Randall
